The same week that the United States made unlocking phones illegal, is the same week Canada proposed this legislation to have carriers unlock phones for their users. It is interesting how different every government is, and how differently they view legislation. Its ridiculous that the government can pass a law making it illegal to use technology that has been purchased in whatever way we want. I understand that there are many things that people can do with unlocked phones that are illegal or "bad," but those people are not going to care that there is a law. They were breaking the law already, when misusing it. All the government is doing, with legislation like this, is restricting the law-abiding citizen from being able to get the legal benefits of having an unlocked phone. Making laws stricter just makes more "criminals" out of good upstanding people.
What is also strange about the unlocking law is that it's only illegal while you are under contract (unless I remember this wrong). So, if the law is designed to prevent people from unlocking their phones and leaving the carrier in the dust, what is the point of ETFs? And does that mean you don't really own your phone until the contract term ends?
ReplyDeleteAs another followup, while the "title" of your blog is "to be added later," I'd definitely recommend adding a title to each blog post. At least so you can avoid getting a url like this: toddscsblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/httpwww.html
ReplyDeleteOops it was supposed to have a title but i must have forgotten to put in n...
DeleteUnlocked cell phones have been of great use to me and my family in the past, since we're able to use the same phone when we go out of the country. My dad has taken his unlocked iPhone to Haiti, purchasing a sim card for a "pay as you go" carrier there. I did the same thing in 2007 when I went to England, using a "pay as you go" carrier's sim card in my own phone. I plan to do the same thing when I go out of the country this summer, thankfully I already have an unlocked cell phone, I guess.
ReplyDeleteYour article reminded me about of the TSA. There is another group that is "making criminals out of good upstanding people." Now that I'm thinking about it, there are quite a few groups doing that these days.
